Dexter is a nice
guy. He's a good friend, a reliable
co-worker, and (usually) a faithful boyfriend.
He has only one quirk--he's a serial (and sometimes sadistic)
killer. But he only kills other serial
killers, generally ones who have eluded the justice system and who need to be
put away. Besides, it isn't really his
fault; he had a traumatic childhood like you can't believe.
That the creators managed
to make a repeat murderer into such a sympathetic character is a testament to
their skill and imagination. You root
for Dexter, don't want him to get caught, and even want him to kill his latest
target because that target is just so evil and the police don't do anything
about it.
It's great fun.
The characters are
vivid and distinct. The plot twists and
turns are interesting and usually unexpected, over and over (though not always)
catching me by surprise. The irony and double entendres are delightful. Dexter works for the police (analyzing blood
spatters), and when the lieutenant says they're close to the murderer of
someone Dexter has killed, the camera zooms into Dexter's impassive face, and
you hear him thinking, You don't know how close.
The music is
gripping and memorable. Some naked breasts and nipples are shown, which some people (including me) enjoy, and some simulated intercourse (which doesn't do anything for me.)
There are five
separate seasons of Dexter, with a sixth rumored to come out. Each season tells a specific story with
several sub-plots. Excitement and calmer
scenes alternate with a good rhythm to highlight the excitement, and the calmer
scenes are never too long to reduce your interest.
There are a few plot
flaws, but small enough to be ignored.
Whatever you might
think of the morality of the story, I give it the highest rating - +++++
it gets your pulse up as much as a sprint.
