Royal intrigue,
treachery and sex in a medieval England
type of fantasy setting.
In the first ten
minutes, we see bizarrely mutilated bodies and reanimated corpses, and people
speak of a distant wall beyond which lie unknown dangers. The rest of disk one
is typical King Arthur style fiction. Even just as a straight tale of medieval
adventure, it works for me though I'm hoping the fantasy elements come into play soon. The characters are mostly plausible, the settings
convincing, and the plot, to the extent I could follow, was engaging. I
finished the second hour eager to see what would come next.
The story shows a
fair number of bare breasts and nipples, which some people (including me)
enjoy, and occasional simulated intercourse (which does nothing for me.) There
is inappropriate brother-sister contact and also frank incest; if that's too
much of a turnoff, don't watch the series. Killings and murders abound, but not
so frequently and not with so much gore as to become tiresome.
Direwolves are mentioned
frequently. However, these are nothing
more than a extinct species, somewhat larger than modern wolves, but not with
any magical significance. There is also a videogame called Direwolf20.
The music is
stirring but forgettable.
The plot is so
complicated and the characters so numerous, I had difficulty understanding all
of it. James
Hibbard's blog gives the clearest summary I've found. His comments are
snarky and very funny.
In spite of the
difficulty following all the threads, I give Game of Thrones ++++. It
gets your pulse up to a run.
